“The Story of Bob Shumway A Small Town Leland Farm Boy” was hot off the press for the Memorial Day celebration and book signing on May 30. Although Bob was recuperating from a mishap earlier in the week and unable to attend, he pre-signed all 50 books that were for sale.
At the book signing were the author, Mitchell Henne, and illustrator, Porter Thrall, students at Leland High School and Eagle Scout candidates. Bob was interviewed last summer by the students in conjunction with A Book by Me literacy project for youth.
The project includes interviewing a WWII veteran or hero in order to write and illustrate a 10-page children’s book on their life. The soft-cover book, which is published by Never Forget Publishing, includes the veteran’s story, photographs, biography, and a matching school curriculum.
A Book by Me is a not-for-profit organization. A donation of $250 provides a set of 20 storybooks to a school or local library. More than 50 veteran/hero stories have been published nationwide.
Since all 50 copies of Bob’s story were sold out within a week, more copies will be ordered if there is enough interest. The cost is $20 each. Contact Deb Davey at Resource Bank, 815-495-7042, if you are interested.
