Little Indian Creek Cemetery

AKA: Holverson Cemetery, Klove Family Cemetery

What is today known as Little Indian Creek Cemetery is located south of Leland in Section 22 of Adams Township at 2100-2158 N 45th Road, Leland.

According to a brief history written by Virginia Hann and Berdeane Wagner in 1984, the first burials were immigrants who died of smallpox on their way to Iowa. They were buried on a knoll on the northwest side of the Little Indian Creek about 1824. For several years thereafter, the site was used as a private burying ground by the Klove family and their neighbors.

The first recorded burial was Eddie Richardson, son of Owen Richardson, who died September 1, 1842.

The Little Indian Creek Cemetery Association was formed in August 1890. The land at the time was the farm of Nels Olson. The cemetery is still managed by a six-member board, with Mike Johnson as the current president and Terry Neidigh secretary/treasurer.

The Find a Grave online website lists over 650 internments, with many familiar local surnames: Abbott, Bernard, Danielson, Fuchs, Grover, Gunderson, Halverson, Hanson, Johnson, Larson, Nelson, Ohme, Olson, Riskedal, Tellefson, and Vermeland, to name a few.

To find the cemetery from the intersection of US Route 34 and 1950th Road, proceed south on 1950th Road a short distance to North 45th Road. Turn left, and proceed about two miles to the cemetery. Or from the intersection of US Route 34 and E 23rd Road, west of Somonauk, proceed south on E 23rd Road 2.6 miles, turn right on N 45th Road and proceed 1.7 miles to the cemetery.
